Windrose Ship Gear Guide: Best Cannons and Upgrades
Sailing a Frigate into Blackbeard's territory with stock cannons and zero armor is a guaranteed ticket to the bottom of the ocean.
In Windrose, the ship you purchase is essentially just a blank wooden canvas. Its actual combat effectiveness is entirely dictated by the four gear slots managed at your base's Wharf: Cannons, Hull Modification, Boarding Party Gear, and Naval Tactics.
Now before you waste thousands of Piastre blindly buying blueprints from the Tortuga factions, you need to understand that not all naval gear is created equal. Some upgrades offer massive synergistic power spikes, while others are incredibly situational. If you are entirely lost on which base vessel you should even be sailing, take a quick detour and read my complete ship catalog and variants guide first.
The Upgrade and Ascension System
You craft and upgrade all of your ship equipment at the Shipwright's Workshop.
Every piece of gear (except Naval Tactics) can be leveled up from Level 1 to Level 15 to increase its base raw stats. However, you cannot just upgrade an item while it is currently bolted to your galleon. You must physically detach the gear from your ship via the Wharf menu and place it in your personal inventory before the Shipwright's Workshop will let you interact with it.
More importantly, Cannons and Hull Modifications can be Ascended from Rare to Epic rarity using Tumbaga Ingots. Ascending a piece of ship gear unlocks a powerful secondary passive ability. If you are struggling to find the rare metals required to fund these ascensions, keep my resources discovery guide open.
Best Cannons: The Artillery Meta
Cannons are broken down by weight: 12-Pounders, 24-Pounders, and 36-Pounders. The heavier the cannon, the higher the base damage, but the slower the reload speed. Always equip the heaviest cannon your specific ship variant can support.
Beyond weight, the Rogue Buccaneers faction sells three distinct blueprint variants that dictate your cannon's passive abilities.
The Verdict on Cannons
If you are sailing a smaller ship with only one cannon slot (like the Ketch or the Brigantine), the Perfectly Ordered cannons are undeniably the best choice. Hitting an enemy within four seconds of reloading is incredibly easy, meaning you essentially have a permanent 30% reload speed buff during a dogfight.
However, once you graduate to the endgame Frigate and gain access to dual cannon slots, you should immediately switch to the Devastating variant. The Epic reload speed buff perfectly synergizes with the "Raked" debuff, allowing you to quickly stack that 30% damage vulnerability onto enemy vessels.
Best Hull Modifications: The Armor Meta
Hull modifications are blueprints purchased from the Smugglers of Port Royal. They dictate your ship's physical defense and sustain.
The Verdict on Hulls
Keelhold Bracing is the absolute best modification in the game. In standard combat, getting hit by a cannonball instantly interrupts and degrades the healing effect of your Combat Repair Kits. The Keelhold bracing completely removes this penalty. When upgraded to Epic, it extends the total healing duration by 30%, making your ship nearly unsinkable in prolonged engagements.
Best Naval Tactics: The Passive Buffs
Naval Tactics are completely unique. They cost 500 Piastre from the Smugglers of Port Royal, but they cannot be upgraded or Ascended. They simply slot into your ship and provide a permanent passive buff.
The Verdict on Tactics
You want Stretch The Supply.
When paired with the Epic Keelhold hull bracing, your Combat Repair Kits will last an obscenely long time. Furthermore, the 200% duration increase to Grog means the specialized combat drinks you craft at your alchemy table will persist through multiple naval encounters. Alternatively, if you prefer an aggressive debuff approach, Silence The Guns essentially cripples enemy damage output the moment you land your first broadside.
A Note on Boarding Party Gear
The final slot is your Boarding Party Gear. This item is an oddity. You craft it at Uncommon rarity, and it cannot be Ascended to Epic. However, you can still dump resources into it at the Shipwright's Workshop to push it up to Level 15. Doing so massively inflates the attack damage and survivability of your AI crewmates when you grapple an enemy vessel. If you want to know how to execute those grapples without losing your crew, check my naval combat and boarding guide.
Lock in your loadout, stockpile your Tumbaga Ingots, and keep checking the Windrose Hub for more ways to monopolize the archipelago.
