Windrose Alchemy Guide: Potion Recipes and Elixirs

Relying entirely on scavenged berries and dirty bandages to survive a pirate raid is a fantastic way to end up six feet under.

While cooking hot meals gives you a massive buffer to your health and stamina, sometimes you need immediate, raw mathematical advantages to survive a brutal encounter. You need instant healing, massive damage spikes, and emergency teleportation. All of these tactical advantages are locked behind the Windrose alchemy system.

I spent my first dozen hours entirely ignoring alchemy because digging up mud for clay bottles felt tedious. Do not make my mistake. Once you start fighting endgame bosses, you absolutely must have a pocket full of elixirs. If you are entirely lost on where to find the raw materials to start brewing, keep my Windrose resources guide open in another tab.

Editor's Note: Windrose is still actively evolving in Early Access, meaning this recipe list is a work in progress. We will continuously update this registry as we discover more alchemical combinations in the deeper biomes.

Setting Up Your Laboratory

You cannot brew complex magical elixirs over a campfire. You have to construct a dedicated workspace.

The Alchemy Table

To start your chemical journey, you need to build the base Alchemy Table. It costs 5 Wood and 2 Clay Pots. However, it comes with strict zoning laws: it must be placed directly under a constructed roof, and it must sit inside the glowing radius of your Bonfire.

The Stove and Pot Upgrade

The basic table only lets you brew minor healing supplies and base ingredients. To unlock the good stuff, you have to upgrade the station to Level 2. You do this by constructing a Stove and Pot (which costs 5 Stone, 5 Clay, and 1 Copper Pot) and placing it within the same Bonfire radius. If you are confused by how these base upgrade proximities work, read my base building and infrastructure guide.

The Alchemical Foundation

Before you can brew a single potion, you have to manufacture your glassware and your base liquids.

Everything starts with a Clay Bottle, which you craft using a single piece of raw Clay. Do not throw these away.

Once you have your bottles, you need to create an Alchemical Base. This uncommon resource is the core foundation for almost every magical potion in the game. You craft it by combining 1 Clay Bottle with 1 Misty Orchid. You can find these glowing blue flowers scattered around the Coastal Jungle, especially at night. Furthermore, if you are looking to waterproof your fabrics at the Tanning Rig, you will need to brew Tannin, which requires combining 1 Clay Bottle with 2 Tree Bark.

The Master Potion Registry

Once your table is upgraded and your pockets are full of Alchemical Bases, you can start brewing actual combat advantages.

If you are just looking for the absolute most efficient way to keep your health bar topped off, I highly recommend cross-referencing these recipes with my complete healing guide.

Rum-Based Grogs

Standard elixirs use Alchemical Bases and last for 15 minutes. However, the Alchemy Table is also used to mix high-end alcohol.

These "Grogs" bypass the Misty Orchid requirement entirely, relying instead on stockpiles of hard liquor you salvage from shipwrecks or purchase from vendors. More importantly, Grogs last for a full 30 minutes, making them perfect for extended dungeon crawls.

  • Gunroom Grog (Level 2): Requires 4 Rum Bottles, 2 Whiskey, and 3 Cayenne Peppers. Increases your firearm reload speed by 15%.

  • Hard Grog (Level 2): Requires 4 Rum Bottles, 2 Brandy, and 3 Limes. Increases your flat Damage Resistance by 15%.

  • Deadeye Grog (Level 2): Requires 4 Rum Bottles, 2 Madeira, and 1 Coffee Beans. Also increases Damage Resistance by 15%.

If you are running out of storage space for all these bottles, make sure you upgrade your base capacity using my inventory and storage guide.
