Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream - The Complete Guide To Gifts, Phrases, And Confessions
Micromanaging the social lives of your digital clones requires a delicate touch and a complete understanding of how the internal relationship matrix actually operates.
Getting a massive population onto your island is only half the battle. Once they are unpacked, they are going to start asking you for advice on literally everything. They want to know what to say, what to eat, and how to tell their crush they love them. If you just click through these prompts blindly, you end up with a painfully boring town full of identical robots. Now before you waste your level up rewards on useless items, I am going to show you how to actively manipulate their behavior using gifts, phrases, and careful confession planning.
If you are looking for the rest of my advanced strategies, you can find the complete collection in our Tomodachi Life hub.
The Art Of Gift Giving
You have two different types of gift giving to manage here. You have everyday gifts, and you have level up rewards. Mixing them up is a massive waste of resources.
Everyday gifts are simple. You hand them food or clothes to raise their baseline happiness. I always stick to food. Specifically, I hunt for their all time favorite meals. Before you hand a Mii a cheeseburger, check their stomach gauge. If they are already full, they will flat out refuse the item and hand it back. Also, never give them expensive treasures as a daily gift. Take those shiny objects straight to the pawn shop as I outlined in my guide on making money and unlocking shops.
Level up gifts are entirely different. When a Mii levels up from eating their favorite food, the game lets you permanently alter their code. You only get to choose one gift per level up, and it does not increase their happiness gauge. It strictly alters their behavior or inventory.
Expanding The Island Dictionary
Sometimes a Mii will walk up to you and ask what they should talk about with their friends. This is your chance to inject custom dialogue into the game via Phrases.
You type in a word or a sentence, dictate the exact pronunciation for the text to speech engine, and categorize it as a person, place, or activity. This Phrase is then permanently logged into your Island Dictionary.
Here is the catch. Phrases are not exclusive to the Mii who asked for the topic. They become completely universal. Every single resident on the island will suddenly start using that specific phrase in their daily conversations. It is an incredibly funny mechanic, but it can get chaotic fast. If you make a typo, you can go into the Island Dictionary through the Town Hall and edit the audio pronunciation. However, you cannot overwrite the actual text. If you hate what you typed, you just have to delete the entry entirely.
Orchestrating Confessions
When you see a pink heart bubble floating in an apartment window, a Mii is ready to confess their love. This is the most stressful social event on the island.
They will ask you where they should do it, how they should approach the target, and what they should wear. Honestly, the success rate of a confession is mostly random and heavily reliant on their base personality compatibility. It is essentially a roleplay mechanic, so just dress them in something that fits their vibe.
Occasionally, third party Miis will literally crash the confession to declare their own love for the same target, forcing a very awkward decision. If the target says yes, they officially become Sweethearts. If you want to know how to take them from dating to the altar, read my breakdown on how to get married.
If the target says no, the rejected Mii plummets into a deep depression. Their happiness meter drops to zero and gets replaced by a dark purple sadness gauge. You will immediately need to step in and follow my instructions on fixing friendship fights and depression to get them functioning again.
Birthdays And Mii News Broadcasts
The social calendar dictates the mood of the entire town. Every Mii has a birthday that you assign during their creation. When a resident's birthday hits, their friends throw a party in their apartment.
If it is the birthday you registered for yourself on your main profile, the entire island gathers in the plaza to sing to you, and the game gifts you a unique Birthday Cake item. If you missed your special day, do not try to cheat the console clock to go back in time. I warned you about this in my guide covering the severe time travel penalties. It breaks the shop rotations entirely. Just wait until next year. If you want to change a date legally, you can adjust it through the profile menus using the same methods I covered in my walkthrough on editing, deleting, and changing Mii names.
Finally, keep an eye on the Mii News broadcasts. This local television station interrupts your game whenever a major milestone is hit, like a new facility opening or a new wave of residents moving in. It is a great way to track your overall progression. If you ever want to rewatch a ridiculous news segment, you can access the archives directly from the News Station building, provided you have not deleted the Miis featured in that specific broadcast.
